Join us on a unique adventure for the paddler who wants to experience it all! Expansive lakes, exciting whitewater, and stunning scenery are all situated on the historically and culturally significant Hayes River. This 16-day trip has it all. Start your trip in Thompson Manitoba, the Hub of the North, and board the plane for a scenic flight to Bunibonibee (Oxford House) Cree Nation, where we will start our paddle.
Trace your way along the fur trade super-highway to York Factory as you hone your flatwater and whitewater paddling skills. The Hayes River is integral to Indigenous history and has long been a major transportation, economic, and communication route. It continues to reflect the deep connection between Indigenous peoples and the landscape.
You will gain a deep appreciation for this Canadian Heritage River as you travel through the Canadian Shield into the Hudson Bay Lowlands, watching the transition from boreal forest and granite-lined rapids to beach-shored lakes to soaring sand cliffs. Opportunities for wildlife sightings abound – this river is home to moose, otters, eagles, black bears, polar bears, wolves, and more.
Upon reaching York Factory, spend a full day on the historic grounds, tour the factory and walk the shoreline examining centuries-old artifacts, and brand a wooden paddle (option to include below) with the York Factory crest. The following day enjoy a jet boat ride to Gillam Manitoba, where we will load onto the Via Rail train and enjoy our final leg of transportation back to Thompson.
Our experienced guides will ensure a safe and memorable experience, sharing insights into the local flora and fauna, as well as the rich cultural history of the area.
